Sagarika had to engage in a lengthy legal battle to fight for custody of her children as she and Anurup were estranged by then.In January 2013, the Calcutta High Court granted Sagarika custody of her son Abhigyan and daughter Aishwarya.

In a 2013 interview with NDTV, Sagarika expressed her relief and gratitude for winning custody of her children, saying, “I want to convey my regards to my well-wishers. My ordeal is finally over. I pray to God that children can always stay with me.”
